You have been scheduled for a flu vaccination appointment at Regent Medical Centre during the weekend of Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October.

These appointments are for eligible patients aged under 65 who are registered with GP practices in Gosforth and Jesmond.

Vaccinations are by appointment only. This is not a drop-in service.

Before you Arrive

Before you arrive, please read the information below. It will help your appointment run smoothly and keep waiting times as short as possible.

Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your appointment.
Our clinic is fully booked, so arriving just a few minutes before your scheduled time helps us keep everything running on time for everyone.

Seasonal Influenza (Flu) Vaccination 2026/27

Why am I being offered a flu vaccine?

Flu is a common infection caused by the influenza virus. It can spread easily from person to person through coughs, sneezes, and close contact.

Flu can make you feel very unwell, causing fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, and extreme tiredness. Most people recover within a week, but for some people flu can lead to serious illness, hospital admission or even death.

It is recommended for all adults over 65 and those between 18 and 64 with a long-term condition which increases the chance of being seriously ill with flu or are in close contact with those at risk.

The flu vaccine helps protect you against the strains of flu expected to circulate this winter. Protection usually develops within about 2 weeks of vaccination. Because flu viruses change regularly, a flu vaccine is needed every year.

Benefits of vaccination

The flu vaccine can:

  • Reduce your chance of catching flu
  • Reduce the severity of the illness if you do get flu
  • Reduce the risk of serious complications such as pneumonia and hospital admission
  • Help protect vulnerable people around you from catching flu, including babies, older adults, and people with long-term conditions

Are there any risks of side effects?

Like all medicines, vaccines can cause side effects, although most are mild and short-lived. Common side effects may include:

  • Pain, redness or swelling at the site of the injection
  • Feeling tired
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Mild fever

These symptoms usually settle within a few days. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare. Healthcare staff are trained to recognise and treat them promptly.

The injected flu vaccines used for adults cannot cause flu because they do not contain live flu virus capable of causing infection.

Please tell the healthcare professional if you:

  • Have ever had a serious allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine or any of its ingredients
  • Are currently unwell with a temperature
  • Have any concerns about allergies or previous vaccine reactions

Important information

  • The vaccine does not protect against every cold or winter virus
  • No vaccine gives 100% protection, but vaccination lowers your risk of severe illness
  • Protection from vaccination decreases over time, which is why flu vaccination is recommended every year

Patient consent

Before receiving your vaccination, you will be asked to confirm that you have:

  • Read and understood the information above
  • Had the opportunity to ask questions and have received answers that you understand
  • Understand the benefits and possible side-effects of the flu vaccine
  • Consent to receiving the seasonal flu vaccine 2026/27

Printed copies will be available on the day if you need one. However, reading the document in advance helps us keep the clinic running smoothly.

Wear clothing that makes your upper arm easy to access.
Please wear a short-sleeved or sleeveless top. If you’re wearing a coat, jacket or other outer layer, make sure it can be removed easily. This helps our nurses give your vaccination quickly and comfortably.

How your appointment will work

To help keep waiting times as short as possible, we will be operating a one-way system throughout the clinic. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Check in at reception
    When you arrive, a member of staff will welcome you and check you in.
  2. Go to your numbered consultation room
    You will be directed to a numbered room along the corridor on the right. All rooms will be clearly signposted.
  3. Wait outside your room
    Please wait outside your allocated room until you are called. There may be one or two people ahead of you.
  4. Get ready while you wait
    Please remove any coats or jackets so your upper arm is easy to access. This helps keep appointments running to time.
  5. Have your vaccination
    When it’s your turn, you will be invited into the room. A member of staff will confirm your name and ask you to verbally confirm that you have read the consent information and agree to receive the flu vaccine. Your vaccination will then be given by one of our nurses as an injection into your upper arm.
  6. Leave using the one-way exit
    After your vaccination, please leave the consultation room and continue forward down the corridor, away from the Reception area where you entered. Follow the clearly marked exit signs. Please do not return through the reception area.

Please note: The exit includes steps. If you have any mobility requirements, please let a member of staff know when you arrive so we can help.

Cancellation

If you need to cancel your scheduled appointment, please do so as early as possible so the slot can be made available to another patient.

To cancel, you will need to contact your practice during their standard opening hours.

For last-minute cancellations on the day of your appointment, let us know by sending a text message. 

Please text the word ‘CANCEL’ along with your name, date of birth, and which practice you’re registered with to 07923 362487.

We won’t be able to reply, but sending a text is the quickest and easiest way to let our team know you won’t be able to attend.
