Meet & Move

An exercise and nutrition course for older people

What is Meet & Move?

Meet & Move is a preventative health programme run through for patients at GP practices in Gosforth and Jesmond.

It is not a medical treatment. Instead, it helps you:

  • Stay active and mobile
  • Build strength and balance
  • Reduce your risk of falls
  • Improve your confidence and independence
  • Feel less isolated and more connected

The programme is designed for people who may be less active, at risk of falls, or experiencing reduced mobility.

Who is it for?

Meet & Move is suitable for people who:

  • Are aged 75 or over
  • Have had a fall or feel unsteady
  • Find it harder to stay active
  • Want to improve their strength and fitness in a safe way

To keep everyone safe, it may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, such as uncontrolled heart or lung disease or severe cognitive difficulties.

If you’re unsure, your GP practice or Social Prescribing team can advise.

How it works

Meet & Move is a regular, friendly group to help you move more and feel stronger.

Sessions are usually weekly at a local community venue. Each 50-minute session includes a gentle warm-up, some simple exercises, and a cool-down.

We focus on helping you:

  • improve your balance
  • build your strength
  • boost your fitness

There’s no pressure to keep up – you go at your own pace. The exercises can be adjusted to suit you, and we’ll gently build things up as you go. We sometimes use equipment like resistance bands or light weights to keep things varied.

You’ll also be invited to some separate nutrition sessions, held on different days.

These cover simple ways to eat well to support your brain and muscle strength.

It’s a welcoming, supportive space – a great way to get moving and feel more confident day to day.

How can I join?

If you think that Meet & Move can help you, then we’d love you get in touch.

The first step is to speak to your GP practice, and ask them to refer you to our Social Prescribing team.

If you’re eligible to join, the next step is a medical assessment with one of our GPs. Depending on your medical history, this might be over the phone or face-to-face. The GP will decide is the course is right for you, and how best to proceed.

If all that goes to plan, our team will be in touch about start dates for the next Meet & Move group.
