Alcohol Awareness Week 2026 – What does alcohol mean to you?

Alcohol Awareness Week runs from 6th to 12th July 2026. This year’s theme is “Alcohol and me”.

Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about our relationship with alcohol. It can become part of everyday life, whether that is meeting friends, celebrating, relaxing after work, or sharing a meal.

Alcohol Awareness Week is a chance to stop and think. Not to judge yourself, but to ask a simple question – what role does alcohol play in my life?

It’s about more than how much you drink

When people think about alcohol, they often focus on units or weekly limits. Those things are important, but they are only part of the picture.

This year’s campaign encourages us to think about whywhen and how we drink. You might drink to celebrate, to socialise, to relax or simply because it has become a habit.

Understanding your own reasons can help you decide whether your drinking still feels right for you.

Take the Alcohol Choices Quiz

If you are curious about your drinking, the Alcohol Choices Quiz is a good place to start.

The free, anonymous online quiz takes just a few minutes to complete. It looks at your drinking habits and gives personalised advice based on your answers. You will also find practical ideas and links to further support if you want them.

Whether you decide to make changes or simply want to learn more, the quiz can help you make informed choices.

Small changes can make a big difference

You do not have to stop drinking to improve your health. Many people notice benefits from making small changes that fit into their everyday lives.

You could try:

  • having a few alcohol-free days each week
  • choosing alcohol-free or lower-alcohol drinks more often
  • planning activities that do not involve alcohol
  • taking your time and drinking water between alcoholic drinks
  • thinking ahead about situations where you usually drink

If one idea does not work for you, try another. Every positive step counts.

Alcohol Change Uk have six top tips for cutting down on alcohol and improving your health.

Looking after your health

Drinking less alcohol can have benefits sooner than you might expect. Many people notice better sleep, more energy and improved mood after cutting down.

Over time, drinking less can also lower your risk of health problems such as high blood pressure, liver disease and some cancers.

The goal is not perfection. It is about making choices that help you feel healthier and more in control.

Where to find support

If you would like more information or support, there are lots of places to turn.

You can:

If you are worried about how alcohol is affecting your health, or you would like to talk things through, your GP practice is there to support you. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss your options.

Every journey starts somewhere

There is no “right” relationship with alcohol that fits everyone. Alcohol Awareness Week is simply an opportunity to reflect on your own habits and decide if anything could change for the better.

Whether you choose to take the quiz, try a few small changes, or simply spend a few minutes thinking about the role alcohol plays in your life, every step is a positive one.
