If you’re feeling low, anxious, or stressed, help is available by text

Everyone has times when life feels a bit too much. It might be stress building up at work or college, worries that will not switch off, problems at home, or just a low mood that feels hard to shake. Sometimes, even small things can start to feel overwhelming when you are already under pressure.

When that happens, it can be difficult to know what to do next or who to talk to. You might not feel ready to speak on the phone or sit down face to face with someone. That is completely okay. There is another way to reach out for support, and it can start with something as simple as a text message.

Support that fits around you

Across the North East and North Cumbria, free, confidential mental health support is available 24/7 by text. It is designed for moments when you need someone to talk to but want something quick, private, and easy to access.

You can text CALMER to 85258 and be connected to trained mental health support workers. They are there to listen, help you make sense of what you are feeling, and support you to take the next step in a way that feels manageable for you.

You do not need to prepare what to say. You do not need to explain things perfectly. You just start where you are.

What happens when you text

Once you send your message, you will receive an automated reply to confirm you are through. After that, you will be connected to a trained volunteer who will text you back and begin a confidential conversation.

You stay in control the whole time. You can take breaks, pause, or end the conversation whenever you need to. There is no pressure to continue if it does not feel right.

The aim is simple – to give you space to talk things through and feel a little less alone.

Why text support can help

Talking can feel difficult when you are overwhelmed. For some people, texting feels more natural. It gives you time to think, time to respond, and space to say things in your own words without the pressure of speaking out loud.

It can also make it easier to reach out in the moment you need support most. You do not have to wait for an appointment or a call back. Help is available day and night, whenever things feel difficult.

This service is not a replacement for ongoing care from your GP or mental health team, but it can be a helpful first step. For many people, it is the moment they stop carrying things alone.

You are not alone in this

Feeling low, anxious or stressed is something many people experience at different points in life. It does not mean you have failed or that you should be able to cope on your own.

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, but it is often the start of things feeling more manageable again.
